MY APPROACH
Approach: Integral / Trained in a Combination of different theories and approaches using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Psychotherapy, Existential & Humanistic models.
I have been trained in a modern Integrative approach which means i use a wide range of different counselling techniques such as CBT, Humanistic, Psychotherapy, Existential and Gestalt Therapy. I believe that better self-awareness can achieve a higher sense of emotional and psychological wellbeing and lead to more effective and happier choices in life. There are many similarities between counselling and psychotherapy, and both seek to create a relationship where you as a client can find more effective inner resources to better understand your problems, therefore my approach is always tailored to individual need and what might work best for you.

Humanistic Therapy
When we work in a humanistic way the key approach is empathy, acceptance, and growth, helping to free yourself from negative assumptions and attitudes about yourself and the world. We will focus on your growth and personal development and on the conscious process rather than the unconscious process and past causes. When we work like this, we can create a therapeutic relationship that is warm and accepting and realise that not being one’s true self is the source of many problems.

Existential Therapy
If we choose to work in an existential way the central problems you may face are embedded around anxiety, loneliness, isolation, despair and ultimately death. Creativity, love, authenticity and free will is the pathway to transformation, enabling us to live lives in the face of uncertainty and suffering. All of us suffer loss, and these losses cause anxiety because they remind us of our human limitations and inevitable death. When working in an existential way the belief is that your problems come from not exercising choices and judgement well enough to create meaning in life and that each of us are responsible for creating that meaning. Working in this way, life is much more about confrontation with our negative inner voice than it is for a humanistic approach.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
For most of us when we visit the doctors, we will be offered CBT therapy. It is based on the idea that thoughts, feelings, what we do and how our bodies feel, are all connected. If we change one of these, we can alter the others. When we are low or upset, we often fall into patterns of thinking and responding which can worsen how we feel about ourselves. CBT works to help us notice and change problematic thinking and behaviour patterns so we can feel better, by aiming to break the link between cognition (the thinking process) and behaviour (action following thoughts and feelings) when under stress.

Psychodynamic Therapy
Finally, if we work in a psychodynamic way the perspective is to understand what is going on in the mind of a person or "to get in the head" of someone to see what is going on in the unconscious part of the mind. This provides insight into how the patient views relationships, experiences, and the world and how that affects preferences, behaviours, and drives. Working in this way, we look back to the past, in childhood, and begin to understand the profound effect our early life experience was on our present situation as adults.

Whatever way we decide to work, whatever the approach I always start by listening and tuning into your experience, to gain a greater understanding of the reasons you have decided to seek counselling. Through our work together I will help you become both more comfortable with who you are and more accepting of yourself, less anxious and self-critical.
It can be a difficult decision when going into counselling and a key moment in one’s life.
